As the first publication by musician and writer Joo Yuntak, this book presents a writing practice that pushes against the boundaries of genres and dismantles the conventions of book-making. Part I, Places, consists of reflections on sound, place, and the psychogeographic techniques of mapping. Beaches loosely mirrors or refracts the first part, entering through fiction, non-fiction, and diary fragments into a journey that deconstructs Marguerite Duras’s novel The Ravishing of Lol Stein. The language of this book recounts the stories of faint beings dwelling at the edges of thought. It is not a planned experiment, but rather a contingent wandering or drifting that exceeds the usual concept of a walk. Following the rhetoric of walking, we arrive at “empty places” and sense glimmers that normative perception could never quite capture.
